What is it about the Canaanites?
All that is written about Cain and his line is in Genesis 2:4-4:24, so we can logically conclude that the descendants of Cain relates to the man formed of the dust, in whose nostrils the LORD God breathed the “breath of life and [he] became a living being” Genesis 2:7 and the “flesh” which God regretted having made and destroyed with the flood of Noah (Genesis 6:7).  The first generations of Cain are listed in Genesis 4 and it states that the 6th generation of Cain’s line was Lamech, father to Jubal (“first inventor” of tent dwelling farmers), Jabal (“father of all” who played the harp and flutes) and Tubal-Cain (forger of all implements of bronze and iron) which is consistent with the belief of some that the Canaanites are descended of Cain. The earliest of these activities have been scientifically identified as having originated in and around Canaan.

God’s consistent position with regards to the Canaanites (not infiltrating the bloodline of the descendants of Seth or the Jews by marriage) and His destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, centered in the Southern Levant regions (Canaan, the Land of ancient Israel and Palestine) reinforces the belief that Cain’s descendents included those who were “of the earth”, men of great wickedness and those God wished to destroy with the flood (Genesis 6:1-6).  Also, the concern of Lot’s daughters, after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, was that there was “not a man in the earth, to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth”, Genesis 19:31.  This leads me to believe that the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah were a remnant concentration of “people of the earth”, i.e. descended of Cain and not descended of Seth, because there were other men on the earth after the flood but their concern was for which “kind” of men.
In Canaan there were the Nephilim also, before and after the flood of Noah (Genesis 6:4).  The Nephilim were the offspring of fallen angels with (I believe) Cain’s descendants.  In Numbers 13:33, we are told “the sons of Anak” spotted by spies for Moses in Cannaan were “part of the Nephilim” (giants).  In Numbers 13:22 we are told that Anaks descendants were in Hebron and there is mention of it being built 7 years before Zoan in Egypt.
It is interesting that there is mention of Zoan, an Egyptian area with no present day known locale, but referenced heavily in Isaiah 19: 11 & 13 just before his recitation about “In that day” indicating prophecy of future events.  Isaiah 19:19 gives us the familiar passage “In that day there will be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the LORD near its border.”  Widespread opinion is that this altar is the Pyramid of Giza and that would lead us to believe it was built 7 years after Hebron, during a time of the Anakim / Nephilim / giants.  Who else could physically have built Giza other than giants of enormous strength?  Or perhaps Giza is the city Cain built and named for his son, Enoch (meaning “teaching”)?
Whether or not the Canaanites at the time of Abraham through Moses were remnants of the line of Cain (mingled with the fallen angels), descendents of Ham, or both, we nonetheless have compelling Biblical information that God did not want the Jews to intermarry with them – and for the best reason of all.  The birth of Jesus Christ, the savior of all mankind, was dependent upon God’s direction of the “seed” of Eve through every person in that line – a line that could only be through Seth and Noah and Shem at the first.
To show that the line to Christ included specific women – those also created in the image of God – we only need look at the stories of Sarah and Rebekah.  Abraham already had offspring by Sarah’s handmaid but God directed that Sarah would have a child by Abraham and that Isaac would be his heir.  God called Isaac “thy son, thy only son” when telling Abraham not to kill the boy.  This places Sarah’s seed, not just Abraham’s, directly in the ordered line of Christ.  Also, by God’s will, Rebekah was found as wife for Isaac by a promise to Abraham not to select a wife from among the Canaanites.  This was more than an objection to their gods or their culture.  Considering God’s assignment for Tamar, we have considerable confirmation that the line of Christ could, but must not, be broken by Canaanite infiltration.  This is not a bigotry but insurance that Christ would be born into the world.  The seed in the image of God must come by Seth through Noah, Shem, Abraham (Sarah), Isaac (Rebekah), Jacob (Leah), Judah, (Tamar) & Perez – on to Mary.
